What does a doula actually do?
It is World Doula Week, so I want to take some time to celebrate and talk about doulas for a minute.
Because a lot of people have heard the word… but aren’t totally sure what that actually means or how it’s different from a midwife or doctor. There is a lot of misinformation about these different roles, so I’m hoping this will clear some of that up.
Your midwife or OB is your medical provider. They’re responsible for the clinical side of things. Monitoring you and baby’s vitals, making medical recommendations, and “catching” your baby.
A doula isn’t that. A doula is there for you.
They’re the one helping you stay grounded when things get intense, helping you think through decisions and reminding you of your options, supporting your partner, and just being with you in a way that’s really hard to explain until you’ve experienced it.
There’s also something about doulas that I don’t think gets talked about enough.
They don’t have anyone else to answer to.
They work for YOU. 100%. They’re not working under hospital policies. They’re not answering to insurance. They’re there for you, and only you.
Which is why they’re in such a unique position to support you and advocate alongside you when things feel overwhelming. They can help slow down the room, and make sure you’re the center of every decision being made (in a system that often bypasses that important part).
And the research is pretty clear around the benefits of doulas.
When a doula is present, births are statistically shorter, C-section rates are lower, and people report feeling more satisfied with their experience overall.
This is why your birth team matters so much.
You can have all the information in the world, but if you don’t feel safe, supported, and seen by the people around you, it changes how you experience your birth.
That’s why we spend an entire module inside The Birth Prep Circle on this.
Not just who to hire, but how to actually choose people who feel aligned for you.
Because that piece alone can completely shift your experience.
Our next cohort starts Monday, so if you’ve been on the fence about joining us, now is the time.
We hope you’ll join us in circle.
Always in your corner,
Kayla & Leslie
