The real key to going into labor naturally

The last weeks of pregnancy can feel like one big waiting game. Everyone’s asking “any baby yet?” while your provider might already be hinting at (or pushing) induction. Add in your own impatience, and it’s no wonder so many women feel stressed before labor even begins.

But here’s the truth: your body isn’t broken just because labor hasn’t started yet.

Right now, nearly 30% of labors are induced.

Does that mean a third of women’s bodies can’t go into labor “on time”? Of course not. That’s not a flaw in your body — that’s a flaw in the system.

If you're worried about going into labor by a certain time, here's what we want you to know:

When we’re stressed, our bodies pump out adrenaline and cortisol. Those hormones are great for fight-or-flight… but they don’t create the conditions labor needs.

For labor to start, your body has to feel safe. Oxytocin — the “love hormone” that drives contractions — flows best when your nervous system is calm, cared for, and supported.

That’s why the most powerful thing you can do right now isn’t to force labor, but to nurture yourself.

✨ Rest and nap whenever you can.
✨ Eat warm, grounding, nourishing foods.
✨ Surround yourself with people who feel safe.
✨ Soak in comfort — a bath, a cozy blanket, or a slow walk outside.

Whatever you find nurturing - do more of that.

These aren’t “fluffy extras.” They’re the very signals your body needs to know it’s safe to soften and open.

And if your provider starts pushing timelines or interventions that don’t sit right with you? Remember this: you always have choices. You are in charge of your body and your baby. Full stop.

Inside The Birth Prep Circle, this is exactly what we teach — how to prepare for birth in a way that honors your body’s wisdom and puts the power back where it belongs: with you. Our next cohort starts October 1, and we’d love for you to join us.

We trust women.
Why do we think preparing for birth is so important? Why, as doulas, do we believe women often benefit from a doula even more in the hospital than they do at home? Why do we get so fired up about the language around birth, like being "allowed" to do something? Because as a society, women are deeply mistrusted. And we believe it is causing terrible outcomes for a large portion of mothers and bab...
Medicaid coverage for doulas - yay or nay?
Leslie here đź‘‹ I recently had the chance to sit down with HeHe Stewart from The Birth Lounge Podcast, and we had an absolutely amazing conversation about something that, on the surface, sounds like a great idea, but that I have some serious concerns about. The topic? Medicaid coverage for doulas. At first glance, it sounds like a huge win. More access to doula care? Amazing. More families being ...
Thank God you were in the hospital…
Birth in the hospital is not the same thing as undisturbed, physiologic birth.  We feel the need to say that because when conversations around home birth, midwifery legislation, and "birth safety" come up, this feels like one of the biggest missing pieces that people do not understand. We hear the safety argument over and over. We hear stories of births that went sideways and people saying, "th...
